Minutes from the Steering Committee meeting of September 2nd 2009
- Barrie Downtown Neighbourhood Association (BDNA) was the name voted on by this committee to be the association name. The vote was unanimous. Other suggested names included – Barrie Lakefront Assoc. – Heart of Barrie.
- It was decided that this would be a non-profit, organized grassroots association. It would be easier because there would be no paper work, insurances, audits, etc. to worry about. Becoming incorporated is a complex process. A charity can be the fund raiser for our association.
- Persons who volunteered to be on the Barrie Downtown Neighbourhood Association as co-chairmen are: Ben Strudwick, Geof Birchall, Stephen Riddell, & Bryan Rusnell.
- A chair is needed to keep the committee in line and to hear each other out. Suggested by Geof, Ben Strudwick is going to chair next meeting.
- The mission statement as proposed will be as follows: “The Barrie Downtown Neighbourhood Association is working to promote a safe, healthy, accessible city centre. Our goal is to make the downtown core the heart and soul of our community, inclusive and culturally diverse.”
- The boundaries shall be High St. (west) to Berczy St. (east) & the Lakeshore to Hwy. 400 (including Queens Park). Emphasis is on the downtown core.
- Membership is open to any citizen of Barrie who would like to get involved. There will be no membership fees at this time.
- The Structure committee will revert to a Steering committee for organization and distribution purposes.
- We do not have any information on the Crime Prevention Committee as we have not heard anything about their meetings. A meeting will be set up.
- The Long Term Planning/Property Standard (LTP/P) committee met on August 27, 2009 and the minutes are available upon request. The next meeting of LTP/P committee is September 23, 2009 at 7 pm at Barrie City Hall. RSVP requested.
- Geof Birchall will set up a domain, mail boxes and a website for the Barrie Downtown Neighbourhood Association.
- As far as Media is concerned A- Channel and the local newspapers will put out information for us.
- A City Hall room agreement form needs to be filled out to reserve a room.
- Phone Tree:- There is a privacy issue with divulging people’s phone numbers and info without their consent, A way needs to be set up so we can send out information to persons on the list.
- A great opportunity to get out more information would be to hand out flyers about the BDNA, at the BBQ on September 19 at Centenial Park, for the Historic Neighbourhoods strategy.
- A future meeting for, for the next BDNA structure committee will possibly take place on October 7, 2009. A check needs to be made first with City Hall to see what meeting room would be available
- The meeting adjourned at 8:35 pm
