Minutes from the Safety Committee meeting of September 24th 2009

Meeting called to order at 07:15 PM.  Members were welcomed, and asked to introduce themselves.  There were 2 structure/steering co-ordinators, 5 co-ordinators (1 from the Busby Centre and 1 from BCHC) and 1 police constable in attendance.

The Constable gave her qualifications and history with the Barrie Police. The Constable‘s presentation was to outline the various services and opportunities available through the Community Services Unit, viz.

-          C.O.P.S. – citizens on patrol service

-          Block Parents

-          Neighbourhood Watch

-          Victim Crisis Assistance

-          CPTED – Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design

-          Barrie Police Website – releases and e-mail updates

The Constable said that if it is an emergency dial 911. If it is not an emergency that we call/report at any time (24/7) by phone 705-725-7025, enter 1 to reach communications and state the problem. The problem(s) might be suspicious behaviour of person(s) or vehicle(s). Note down and give to the constable physical description(s) of the person (top to bottom): skin colour, sex, hair colour & Length, Shirt worn, pants worn, shoes worn. What direction the person was going. If the problem(s) is a vehicle, describe it: make and/or model (if you know), colour, car or truck (pick up or commercial), 2 or 4 door, occupant(s) and direction of travel.

A question and answer period followed in which problems in Barrie were examined to apprise the members of the committee of the type of criminal elements and events occurring in the area of the downtown and adjacent areas i.e. drugs, prostitution, vandalism, drunkenness.

The group was then updated on the BDNA’s structure, and made conversant with the problems encountered in communicating with interested parties.  The establishment of the BDNA website at www.barriedna.ca should help to alleviate those problems.  Volunteers were requested to fill the basic committee structure of

-          Chair

-          Vice-chair

-          Secretary

-          Media Co-ordinators

No volunteers were forthcoming.

The direction and focus of the Crime Prevention Committee was discussed, and the group left the meeting to do research and gather ideas for a mission statement and purpose for the Committee.  Another meeting was tentatively scheduled - time and place to be confirmed.

The meeting was closed at 09:00m PM
