Minutes from the Long Term Planning/ Property Standard Committee meeting of October 21st 2009

  1. Introductions were made and the following discussions and comments were as follows:
  2. A presenter from Property Standards (City Hall) was not able to attend the meeting.
  3. The BDNA now has a website (www.barriedna.ca) and it is the best tool we have to encourage people to sign up. It has a blog and forum section where you can discuss what it is you would like to see happen in the downtown area, and share your views and comments, and insight as to how we should go about getting these things done.
  4. There will be a general meeting of the BDNA on Wednesday, November 4th at 7:00 P.M. in the
  5. Council Chambers at Barrie City Hall, all members are invited to attend. Please bring along anyone whom you think might be interested in becoming involved. The meeting will be to bring everyone up to speed on what we have accomplished thus far, and where we want to go.  We would appreciate input relevant to short term goals for the association which are achievable yet inexpensive, and which would help us to involve more concerned citizens. Hope to see you there.
  6. Three volunteers stepped forward and volunteered. The position of Committee Chairman will be Kathleen Reid. Committee Vice Chairman will be Cindy Giller and Committee Secretary will be Jayne Rusnell.
  7. Update:  The next city project for street improvement will be Toronto St.  We expect Maple Ave. to be improved after Toronto Street, at which time 19 trees (possibility: Silva Cell) and plants are being considered as part of the upgrade for sidewalks and streets for Maple Ave. The Silva Cell tree will be a pilot program on Toronto St. The sidewalks on Maple Ave. are being re-bricked and smoothed out now. How trees are maintained by the city will be reviewed and discussed in the future.
  8. Update:  A volunteer talked to the manager of the LCBO to find out what their long term plans for the downtown location are. The LCBO stated they like where they are and the recent improvements in the area are working (police patrols).
  9. Update: There was a proposal made to eliminate the “Nude Silhouettes” signage on Dunlop St.  A volunteer mentioned this at a public meeting at City Hall Council Meeting and then some of the signage was covered up by the owner.
  10. A discussion occurred concerning benches and how they improve an area and allow a person to sit down when needed when walking on the sidewalk.  The committee agreed that more benches are need on downtown streets and will discuss in the future on how to convey this information to City Council.
  11. Education is part of our mandate.  It is important to be informed, and the BDNA website is a good place to start. We need ideas and thoughts, as there is a lot to be done in a pro-active way.
  12. The next meeting of the BDNA Long Term Planning/Property Standards Committee will take place on November 18th, 2009 at Barrie City Hall in the Sir Robert Barrie room.
  13. The meeting adjourned at 8:25 p.m.
