Crime Prevention and Safety Committee Meeting

Minutes – Tuesday, October 27/09

 

Location:  Barrie Community Health Centre

 

1.  Update from previous meeting

     Constable Butler  was contacted.   She will get back to us after she has an  opportunity

     to get more information on the Citizen On Patrol program.  A Police representative for

     the Committee is also being considered .

 

2.  Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CETD) was identified as an

      excellent opportunity for crime prevention to be incorporated into city planning and

      building design.  It is a free service offered by the  Police.

  

3.  Block Parent and Neighbourhood Watch have been successful prevention programs

     but community interest and involvement has decreased over the past few years.  

 

4. Role of the Committee was discussed and a draft was developed for approval at the

     next meeting.  We also reviewed a list of operating principles which

     were presented by a Committee member and approved by all.   See page attached. 

 

5. The meeting minutes will be emailed to all members for approval before being posted

    on the website.  

 

6.  There are computers at the library and residents can use them (free) to access the

     BDNA website.  Residents can use both the Property   Standards Complaint Form

     and/or Crime prevention complaint Form if they have concerns in their

     neighbourhood.   They are available on the website   www.barriedna.ca  and include 

     instructions.

 

7.  Members discussed the use of video cameras at intersections downtown.  Some

     research is being done and the issue will be discussed at a future meeting.   

 

8.  Extra police patrols downtown especially during the summer months was supported

     by the Committee.    This has been effective over the past few month and should be

     put forward as a recommendation by the BDNA.

 

9.  BDNA  letterhead is needed.   Consistent lettering, mailing address, logo (etc) should  

     be used.

 

10. A media contact was identified as  important  for the Association.  especially  

     now.     It is key to promoting our work and getting more residents involved.   Mike,

     volunteered to be media contact for the BDNA.      The Association should consider

     developing guidelines for this role.

 

11. For the November 4th meeting, members would like to see a sign-up list (name, phone

       number of email address)  for this Committee distributed during the

       meeting.

 

12. Some of the downtown variety stores sell drug paraphernalia and it is often located

      near the candy counter , in clear sight of young people.    Some research is being

      done and a follow-up discussion is planned for the next meeting.

 

13. The Committee would like to have a downtown walk-about in order to get an

       inventory of the  downtown area  and  places of concern.  This is to be

       discussed further.

 

14.  On the social side, a Christmas Potluck was suggested.  This would bring together

       members of various committee and interested residents.     No date has been set.

       Any suggestions.    

 

15.  Next meeting:    Wednesday, November 18 at 7 p.m.

                                  at the Community Health Centre (Maple Ave & Ross Street)
