Crime Prevention and Safety Meeting

Wed. Feb. 10 /10 – Minutes

  1. Minutes of Wed. Feb.  were approved

  1. Business Arising -

The Crime Stats discussed at the meeting in January are not for public dis-tribution.

  1. Updates/Discussions

a)  Video cameras at intersections downtown. -   There was a presentation on

video surveillance done in Orillia by an O.P.P. Inspector from Trenton..

London, Windsor and Mississauga are cities currently using video

surveillance.     All have developed codes of practice for the program.  The

BIA (Business Improvement Association) is interested in seeing this program

here in Barrie and is willing to participate in further discussions.   A

Committee member will approach the BIA with the intent of discussing this

issue further and bringing this information back to our next meeting for

discussion.   There needs to be further discussion about the role of this

Committee in any future action on video surveillance.

b)  Sale of drug paraphernalia -   Further discussion on this issue was deferred

     to the next meeting.

c)      Super Jail Offenders released in Barrie -   The cities of Peterborough and Oshawa have the same issue  when people are released from the Central East

Correctional Centre in Lindsay.  Similarly, there is an agreement with the

Municipality that no one is released in Lindsay.  A program superintendent is collecting information to see if this has lead to an increased crime in Peterborough and Oshawa.

A member is calling the Superintendent of the CNCC in Penetang to see if they can come to one of our next meeting.    This will help us to understand the release process being used by the superjail.

It is hard to know how many are being released in Barrie and what impact

this is having on crime in the downtown.

              d) The 40 bars on Dunlop Street -   was discussed briefly.

  1. The Neighbourhood Watch Information Meeting – February 24 at 7 at BCHC.

Flyers were distributed and everyone was asked to distribute in their neighbourhood.  Our media person will contact Rogers and Channel 10 with the

Information.  This will also be promoted at the Farmers Market on Saturday and

Historic Neighbourhoods Strategy workshop at the MacLaren Art Centre on Feb. 20th.

A Night In The Cold -

This is put on by the Simcoe County Alliance To End Homelessness on October 1/10 and the Committee agreed to support this.

  1. Citizen On Patrol –

Some questions were asked about this program sponsored by Barrie Police Services.  More information will be available at the next meeting.

  1. The next meeting of the Committee is Wed. March 10/10 at 7 p.m.
